Here are some more cell phone charms I got in China. They are so similar to the smoking babies I wonder if they are related. They both have poochy bulging eyes and huge heads, and they are doing something inappropriate for babies.
Instead of glamorizing cigarettes these babies come with guns. Their purpose is to glamorize war I guess. People in China aren't allowed to have guns so they don't really need to tell anyone "Think about your children before you gonna sooht."
BANG!
I recognize most of the military hats but not the yellow Gilligan-ish hat.

THINK BEFORE YOU GONNA SOMKE!
These are cell phone charms from a shop in China. The two of them together set me back $1.
The weirdly written words on the package try to make it seem like they are against smoking, but who are they trying to kid? This smoking baby is awesome!
There's a little LED light in the tip of the baby's cigarette, and it lights up when you get a call... or at least it did anyway. I think it only works in China. I was heart-broken when I got back to USA and it didn't work anymore. I guess their satellite signals are different than ours. Either that or the batteries died on the plane ride back. When I go to China next time I will bring it with me and see it if works again.
Both babies have poochy bulging eye bags. That's kind of their trademark look it seems. Even if the LED doesn't work here in the states I still think they're pretty nifty.

DRESSED FLEAS
My Grandmother's Aunt, who used to live in Mexico, brought these dressed fleas back for my dad when he was a kid. He kept them for years and years. Later he showed them to me and I was fascinated by them. I would get into the sock drawer so often where he kept them he finally just gave them to me. My dad put them in the matchbox to protect them back when he was a kid. He wrote TOP on it so he wouldn't accidentally open the box upside down.
When the box is opened you can see my dad carefully encased the dressed fleas in toilet paper.
Seeing them blown up like this is the 1st time I've really been able to get a good look at them. The man flea's arms are made of something thinner than thread. I'm not sure what it is. Maybe a hair.

There's a man and a woman flea dressed in their respective garbs. This would probably look very nice on a wedding cake.
As a kid I thought some Mexican slid the flea's arms and legs into these miniature clothes, but now as an adult I realize the flea is just the head part of the figure. I do wonder about the Mexican who made this. This was created in the 1950s so I guess it's possible the creator is still alive. If not it's a pretty nifty legacy to leave behind. I also wonder how much the creator charged for a job like this. Also I wonder if this was the creator's main line of work and if it provided him with enough money to survive and possibly provide for a family. I wonder if this creator paid kids to catch fleas while he made the clothes, or if he had some special method for farming them. Maybe he had a dog and he intentionally let it get fleas and wouldn't bathe it.

It's also interesting to think about these 2 fleas I'm looking at and realize these fleas are from the 50s. They look about like modern day fleas I guess. I think modern fleas are less formal.

I RECOMMEND THIS CANDY
I don't eat too much Japanese food but I really like their candy. This candy in particular is really good. It's sort of like a gummy bear, but very hard. They put a sour coating on it that will make you almost convulse in pain, but it's a good convulse. These 2 flavors are grape and lemon, and both were super.
In addition to the delicious candy on the inside, there are strange monster illustrations on the outside. They're just slightly too disturbing to be cute, but they almost are. Look at their tails on the backs of the packages. Just look at them!!
It's easiest to buy from a Japanese grocery, but if you don't have one near you there's a website too. It's not in English but apparently you can order from here.
Also check out these other monsters.

PORTRAIT OF A NON-MONSTER
This is a portrait I made for a lady's kid. It went pretty smoothly, but would have been much easier to capture the essence of the kid if he had strange growths or deformities I could have capitalized on. Everyone in the world had a single head, so that makes it more tricky. That means I have to make the head look like this kid. If this kid had 2 heads for instance, I could have drawn 2 basic smiley faces connected to the body and everyone would know it was him.

WEIRD SCIENCE 2 PANELS
This is taken from a book of collected Weird Science reprints 6-10. I believe this story comes from issue 8. The whole story is great, but I consider these two panels to be pure gold. They would be great blown up and framed and hung over the mantle.
I love their dialogue and the way they deduct a possible cause to their problem. I wish I knew how to type sarcastic words because the statement the Admiral makes in the 2nd panel deserves a big sarcastic "REEEEAAALLY?!?!? No way. Are you suuuure?!"

And then the guy talking to him is a real genius. Is he kidding? That never occurred to him either until just now? Two months later?!?! Really?!
That's the Pentagon! Aren't they supposed to be on top of things?

OLD TOYS (Trophies and a caged giraffe)
I got one of these at a plea market, and found the other one in an old toy box as my grandmother's house. I just now noticed they seem to be from the same set. I guess they came from cereal boxes.
The backs of these trophies give very helpful assembly advice. I bet the kids who didn't know how to read English were really confused about what to do.
This is pretty nifty. It's a very tiny giraffe in a train car, and the giraffe has some pivoting motion inside the cage but I can't figure out the purpose.

DISNEY TOYS and RICE CRISPY SUPER HEROES
Still more stuff from my miscellaneous junk drawer of toys. These pictures are not the best. These things are small so when I use the flash all the details are gone. I used a lamp instead and it was at least a little better.

TOYS (Disney, Flintstone, Popeye)
More stuff from my treasure drawer of junk.
Flintstones coin with Barney Rubble.
FRONT:
BACK:
Newspaper comics characters. Olive Oyl and some mystery figures. If anyone knows who these characters are let me know. I remember seeing them in a book of old newspaper comics but can't remember their names. I remember the bearded man had a very serious, no-nonsense grumpy personality, almost to the point of being threatening and unlikeable, which is great for comics! Kids probably hated him. Maybe that's one of the reasons this comic didn't last as long as Popeye.

TOYS (Wolfmen, Cavemen, and more)
I have a few drawers full of old one-color (or sort of colored,) non-articulated toys like these. I really like them. I can't remember where they came from but it's most likely from barrels of junk at flea markets, yard sales and the Goodwill. I like when there's a big box of random stuff I can dig through. Usually when it's a box of random mixed-up junk they sell it cheap.
After years and years of collecting this stuff when I open a drawer I find things I have no memory of putting in there.
Wolfman:
Cavemen:
Boxers with abnormally large craniums. About 1" from head to base.
The bottom of this one says "FLYING CARPET" so I guess he's supposed to be a genie.

SINISTER WINSTON #1
This guy was originally a doodle in my notebook. I like the thought of having a character who does nothing but dastardly evil just for evil's sake. He has no plot nor depth nor direction; he's just mean. It gives me an opportunity to get some evil out of my system in a harmless way.
As a kid when I'd think up an evil trick I'd do it. It always ended with me getting a belt-whippin'. As an adult I've learned it's better to just think about it. Now what I'm trying to do is put my mean ideas to some useful purpose. Maybe there is some good in evil if it can make others happy.

FACE BANK
I bought two banks from a Japanese website called Strapya. They were around $20 each. I got this and another bank, and the total shipping for both was only $5. That boggles my mind how I can get something shipped from Japan for $5. I recently bought an $8 How-to-Draw book from here in the USA and the shipping was an additional $8.
There are motion sensors in the eyes and that triggers the chomping.
Look at this thing go!

BELT BUCKLE OF EVIL
You know how sometimes you see some item of apparel for sale and it looks really great so you buy it, and then when the time comes for you to actually wear it in public, you suddenly feel embarrassed because you know you won't be able to pull it off since you aren't a rock star? Well....
THIS.
I bought a long, long time ago back when I was evil. Now I'm just grumpy.
