ELECTRIC GUITAR PROJECT part 13

As you may or may not remember, I'm having a mental struggle as to how the tail piece should look on my guitar. I originally planned to make a star-shaped tail piece. In the end it didn't look as good as I thought it would when I started it. Plan B was to use a boring old standard tail piece, but that doesn't make me happy either.

I used my photo-manipulatin' program to create some mock-ups of 3 new designs:

This is a pretty straight forward and simple design. It incorporates the curve of the body and stays somewhat subtle.

This one is a little fancier. I'm not sure I like it as much as the previous version. Depending on the time of day when I look at it, I either like it or I don't. I wonder if it seems a little beefy and obnoxious, like a super hero's chest emblem. When I started writing this description I didn't like it. Now that I've finished the paragraph I think maybe I do like it again.

This is a streamlined version of the previous tail piece. I kind of like the pointiness of it.
Does anyone have any thoughts on any of these designs? Another thing to consider is the color of the wood later on. Everything will be darker and shinier, and gradient-ier when it's all said and done.

  1. I vote the first one. It makes the guitar looked balanced and gives it a very traditional, classy look. Are you going to put finsh and gloss on the body? I vote yes on that, too. I am full of votes today.

  2. The first choice works nicely with the over all design of "The Monster",....but I"m drawn to the third choice, just because it looks unlike anything I've seen before.

I have a 12 string electric Ovation solid body that is a really nice rich dark reddish colour..I'm sure you've seen a few SG's in pretty much the same colour. That would be my choice I think.

Can't wait to hear what this sounds like through an amp!

  3. Thanks guys. I think the 1st one does seem to be the most suitable.

I will definitely be putting a finish on it. I was hoping for a John Entwhistle Thunderbird dark-around-the-edges color.

  5. Thanks MnM's M,
Maybe I shouldn't bore holes for the tail piece until it's stained and finished. Then I can sit the different versions on it and get a better idea. Thanks for liking the star. Now I don't feel as bad about it.

  6. I don't think you need any shape. I think it's distracting from the shape and curve of the wood. There are already three metal pieces and the fourth in my opinion just adds more noise. Plus I bet once you make it darker and shiny the natural wood will look even better.

  7. Thanks for the comment! It has to have a tail piece to hold the strings. Other than drilling holes into the body and running strings through to the back side, I can't get around it. Maybe a tail piece that follows the body shape would be less distracting than a straight one.
